Chokes are an inductor coil that has a low resistance to direct current and a high resistance to alternating current. They are designed to smooth out ripples of rectified current by static rectifiers and to filter voltage.
Network chokes for a frequency converter protect both the converter itself and the network from higher harmonics. Chokes limit the degree of increase in the inrush current in the circuit and the mutual influence of converters connected to the same transformer. The process of changing the parameters of the electrical circuit proceeds smoothly, overvoltages are suppressed.
Motor chokes are used in circuits of converters of electric drives of alternating current. They have a high inductance and therefore can work with a long cable length and a high switching frequency.
